Through service on what is known as the Nanking-Canton Railway, under con- struction by the Kiangnan Railway Company, was opened between Shanghai a nd Wuhu on the 1st April 1936, the connecting line joining up this railway with the Shanghai-Nanking Railway and passing on the outskirts of the capital, Nanking, having been completed during the year. The section of this railway from Wuhu to Sunchiapu was completed in 1934, and it is intended to extend the railway south via the Keemun district, in Anhwei, Kintechen and Kweichi, in Kiangsi, Shaowu and Yenping, in Fukien, and thence via Chaoan to Canton.
The Hwainan Railway, running from Tienchiaan (), in Northern Anhwei and terminating at Yukikow (), on the northern bank of the Yangtsze River, 11 kilometres below Wuhu, was fully opened to traffic on the 20th January 1936 and covers a distance of 215 kilometres. Two other railways are projected in Anhwei. Under the auspices of the provincial government, the construction of the Hofei- Yehchinchi section (A), of the Pukow-Hsinyang Railway (f), was started during the year. This line which will provide better communication in Western Anhwei, is expected to open during 1937. The other line from Chenyankwan (EU), to Kushih (4), in Hunan, via Huochiuhsien (), in Anhwei, being an exten- sion of the proposed Pengpu-Chenyang line (E), is being surveyed under the direction of the Tientsin-Pukow Railway Administration.
The Tatung-Puchow Railway, which runs from Tatung, in Northern Shansi, via Taiyuanfu, to Fenglingtu (), opposite Tungkwan Station, on the Lung-Hai Railway is completed with the exception of the section between Taiyuanfu and Yuan- ping (4). Construction work on the 2-kilometre steel bridge spanning the Yellow River at Fenglingtu was commenced in December 1936 and will take nine months to complete..

Under the paragraph entitled "The Internal Situation" allusion has already been made to the loan agreement for the completion of the Shanghai-Hangchow-Ningpo Railway. The distance of the uncompleted section between Zakow, on the Chientang River, and Pakwan (), is 78 kilometres. Work on the Chientang River Bridge, which will be 3,500 feet in length, with 16 spans, is proceeding apace.

The Soochow Kashing Railway, a branch line connecting the Shanghai-Nanking and the Shanghai-Hankow Railways, was opened to traffic on the 15th July 1936.
A Sino-French loan agreement for the construction of the line from Chungking to Changtu was also reached during the year. The entire line, measuring 523 kilome- tres, is expected to be completed in two and a half years. Simultaneously with the signing of this contract, the Szechwan- Kweichow Railway Corporation was established.
Construction on the first section of the projected Hunan-Kweichow Railway, between Chuchow, on the Canton-Hankow line, and Siangsiang, in Eestern Hunan, was started in August. Surveys of the entire route between Chuchow and Kweiyang, the capital of Kweichow. have been completed, as have the surveys for the construction of the railway bridge over the Siang River at Siangtan.
