The estimated population of the State in 1936 was 631,200 (as compared with 505,311 in 1931), of whom 850 were Europeans, 286,100 Malays, 274,400 Chinese, 65,000 Indians, 340 Eurasians, and 4,510 others. The Chinese are chiefly found as cultivators of rubber.

European and Chinese have taken up large areas for planting, chiefly rubber, pineapples and coconuts. The export of tapioca was 58,783 piculs in 1936, as compared with 76,109 piculs in 1935, and the value were $213,406 and $223,874 respectively. The export of rubber in 1936 amounted to 1,495,527 piculs, valued at $59,348,483 against 1,400,422 piculs in 1935 valued at $32,963,598. A remark- able feature of the rubber industry in this State is the large amount of land taken up by the Japanese. In 1935, 682,294 piculs of copra, valued at $2,881,710 and 261,046 piculs of areca-nuts, valued at $1,554,124, were exported.

At the present time the principal exports of Johore are the carefully cultivated rubber, copra, gambier, pepper and areca-nuts, and the natural products of tin, timber, rattans and damar. For almost all such produce Singapore is the port of shipmnt.

Johore is rich in iron ore, and a minc is being successfully worked by Japanese in Batu Pahat and 590,288 tons of ore worth $2,951,445 were exported in 1936. The export of tin ore in 1936 amounted to 999 tons.
