TENGYUEH (MOMEIN)–SZEMAO
A487
or a railway between Tengyueh and Bhamo. The climate of Tengyueh is for the most part excellent. The temperature hardly ever rises above 80° or falls below freezing point. The climate of the valleys to the south of the town, however, is very malarial.
Travellers without adequate money are not permitted to enter Barma and they would do well not to make the journey from Yunnanfu.
Letters for Tengyueh should be marked Via Rangoon & Myntkyina, Burma (foreign postage).
Telegrams should be sent Via Madras from places south and west of Pengyueh but by Chinese radio if from the east.
Parcels can only be sent as far as Bhamo, from which town they could be sent on by caravan by an agent (e.g. Messrs. Litung, Bhamo), or they could be sent via Yunnanfu, but by that route they take several months.
TRADE IN 1935
J
The Tengyueh Customs do not control movements of Chinese goods within Yunuan province, but it is known that native goods are year by year displac- ing foreign articles. This is due, firstly, to the high tariff rates, and, secondly, to communications between Tengyueh and Yunnaufu improving while, at the. same time, the roads to Burma both via Bhamo and Myitkyina have not been repaired and in some places could not now even be found. The number of mule loads entering this district from abroad has fallen from 35,400 in 1927- t, 16,211 in 1935, and the value of nward trade for 1927, 1931 and 1935 was respectively for each year 5.4 million, 1.8 million, and 1.6 million dollars. The outward trade for the same period has fortunately shown improvement, the total value for 1935 being 3 million dollars as compared with 2.5 million dollars for 1934. The district enjoyed yet another good harvest and was also free from bandits, while a very extensive network of roads suitable for cars is nearing completion. However, the year ended badly, for, due to extensive smuggling into Burina of silver, the entire district has been left virtually without a currency the exchange which had been as high as Rupees 100-Yunnan $150, has fallen to Yunnan $220, and for the last two months of the year trade was stagnant.
