LUNGCHOW-MENGTSZ AND YUNNANFU
A 431
Nauming with its succession of gorges and rapids is well worth seeing but accommo- dation for Europeans on the motor boats is not of a luxurious type though each vessel has one special cabin for official travellers. The climate of the port is damp and very hot for some eight; months of the year, but the winter is cold cựõugh to be very pleasantamid such picturesque surroundings.

TRADE IN 1935

[
A
In former years Lungchow was the emporium for the neighbouring dis- tricts, but of late trade has been on the wane owing to the deviation of the caravan route from Yunuan to Poseh and to the development of better high- way communication elsewhere. Movements of the local products viu- downe J► river ports de not appear in Langehow statistics, but it is understood that the volume of transactions whoh a much reduced scald The total value of imports from Indo-China was 52,000 dollars" as agairst 36,000 dollars in 1934, and of exports, which consist mainly of sundry articles sent across the frontier.. in small quantities, 59,000 dollars, as compared, with 108,000 dollars for the preceding year. The failure of the ice and caiseed crops told heavily on thei commercial classes, while, owing to the stabilisation of the Indo-China piastre and the consequent rise a silver quotations of prices of goods from Tonkin' the district has been mainly dependent upon Canton, Shanghai and Hongkong for the supply of its needs. Lungehow is still essentially a rural district, and there was no industrial developineut of interest, throughout the year. The aur service between Canton and Langchow via Wuchow and Nanning was w maintained by the South-Western Aviation Company It is anticipated that the service will be extended to Hanoi, in 1936, thus, linking up with the service, › to Europe via Bangkok..
