silver and bank-notes, exported reaching the phenomenal sum of 215.9 million dollars of which 100.9 million consisted of silver bars, compared with a total of 128.5 million for treasure in 1934. In addition, the import of treasure into Hongkong fell from 78 million to 38.7 million dollars. Effective at noon on the 9th November, the Hongkong Government prohibited the export of Hongkong dollars and silver bullion, supplementing thereby the already existing embargo on shipments of Chinese silver except back to China. This action was preliminary to the adoption of a managed currency, which became effective on the 5th December by a Legislative Council Ordinance requiring the withdrawal of silver in circulation, amending the legal tender laws, and establishing an exchange stabilisation fund. The trade of the Colony of Hongkong declined by 14.2 per cent compared with that of 1934 in terms of local currency, although in terms of sterling there was an increase of 8.7 per cent. The value of imports, including cargoes originating in China, was $365 (£35.3) million in 1935 compared with $415.9 million in 1934; the declared value of exports was $271 (£26.1) million in 1935 compared with $325.1 (£24.8) million in 1934 and $403.1 (£27.4) million in 1933.
