AMOY

Ainoy has an up to date waterworks system, in excellent running order, operated by the Amoy Waterworks Co.

Built in 1923 the reservoirs are capable of holding 400,000,000 gallons of water, enough for one year's consumption. The Company have now provided Kulangsu with water. The water is carried over from Amoy to Kulangsu in boats and pumped to reservoirs on the high points of the Island. The quality of water supplied compares very favourably with any supply in the Far East and is extensively used by visiting steamships.

TRADE IN 1935.

The general trade condition of Amoy suffered a further setback when compared with that of 1934. The main reasons for such a decline in trade

were:

(1) The return during the first part of the year of large numbers of Chinese from abroad which drastically curtailed remittances, thus seriously. reducing the purchasing power of the district.

(2)

The prevalence of smuggling on a large scale,

a large scale, with its attendant destruction of stable markets, national revenue, and trade morale..

(3) The violent fluctuations in exchange causing a drainage of silver abroad, both licit and illicit, and the gradual shifting of trade froni Hongkong to Shanghai,

.

In spite of the adverse conditions to trade enumerated above, there were however, some favourable indications, namely, the excellent rice crops in both spring and autumn, and the general rehabilitation of the agricultural dis tricts of the hinterland.

The total value of foreign imports into Amoy during 1935 amounted to Customs Gold Units 8,028,700, a decrease of some C.G.U. 249,270 when compar ed with 1934. It is to be pointed out, however, that among the articles of staple imports the amount of sulphate of ammonia shipped to this port reached the figure of 180,774 quintals while only 90,624 quintals had been im- ported during 1934. Such increased demand for fertilizers indicated that more peaceful conditions have been prevailed in the agricultural districts of the hinterland. This in addition to the improved means of bus communica- tions in the interior, there is every hope that trade may revive during the -coming year.

The total value of direct exports of Chinese products abroad amounted to $3,676,500, showing a light increase of $140,500 when compared with 1934.
