Thirdly, the complete disappearance of statistical data for silk piece goods conveyed by domestic parcel post, over which the Customs have virtually relinquished control since November 1934, has tended to reduce by some half-million dollars annually the total value of exports from the Hangchow district as recorded by the Customs. Completion of the Ch'ient'ang River bridge, making through connexion possible between the Shanghai-Hangchow-Ningpo Railway and the Chekiang- Kiangsi Railway, will no doubt enhance Hangchow's importance as a centre of com- munication and bring increased prosperity to the district. Work on the construction of the railway from Kashing to Soochow is also nearing completion, and the line is expected to be opened in April 1936.
