Iron ore, the most important item of export abroad, rose to 7.2 million quintals as compared with 4.8 million quintals in 1934. Of the 136 ocean steamers which carried ore to Japan, 79 were cleared from Manganshan, 42 from Tichiang, and the balance from Chenchiayu. The most interesting events of the year were the opening in April of the Nanking-Wuhu Railway and the completion in December of the terminal section of the Hwainan Railway from Chaohsien to Yukikow. The whole line of the Hwaipan Railway, with a length, of 230 kilometres, has been scheduled for formal opening to passenger and freight traffic on the 20th January 1936. Remarkable progress was made in road construction during the year. The network of highways in Southern, Anhwei has been completed, and the total length of highways available to motor traffic in the province is now 4,349 kilometres. With increased improve- ment in reconstruction work, Wuhu bids fair to become a modern commercial city connected with Southern and Northern Anhwei by rail and having quick and easy access to the sea at all seasons of the year.
