Tevel attained in 1933. The total tonnage during the year amounted to 5,797,000 tons, recording a drop of 201,000 tons from 1934, there being an increase of 75,000 tons in direct shipping and a lcst of some 276,000 on coast movements. The British flag still holds first place with 1,838,000 tons, followed by the Japanese with 1,592,000 tons. Next in order of importance coine China, Germany, the United States of America, Norway, Sweden, Denmark the Netherlands, and finally France. Navigation conditions throughout the year showed very little change from those of 1934, the draught of the Haiho remain- ing at about 4 metres at high-water level at Tientsin, causing little interruption to river traffic. For the first time for many years ice began to form in the river early in December, and from the middle of the month till the end of the year it was only possible for vessel to navigate with the aid of ice-breakers, and then only with considerable difficulty.
