was felt severely in Tokyo the special precautions taken in the rebuilding of the capital fully justificd themselves and practically no damage was sustained in the rural districts. The total damage was estimated over twenty million yen.
FOREIGN TRADE FOR 1935
The foreign trade of Japan proper for the year 1935 amounts to Y4,971,309,000; that is,
Y2,499,073,000 in exports and Y2,472,236,000 in imports, the balance in favour of exports being Y26,837,000. Compared with 1934 this represents an increase of Y327,148,000 (or 15.1 per cent.) in exports and Y189,634,000 (or 8.3 per cent.) in imports. The balance in 1934 was unfavourable to Japan by an import excess of Y110,606,000.
The exports which have increased in value are: Raw silk by Y100,238,000, Vegetable Fatty Oils by Y20,761,000, Rayon Tissues by Y14,776,000, Iron by Y12,807,000, Cotton Yarns by Y12,388,000, Comestibles (in tin and bottle) by Y6,826,000, Machinery by Y6,079,000, Wheat Flour by Y5,248,000, Aquatic Products by Y4,262,000, Refined Sugar by Y4,046,000, Copper by Y3,815,000, Glass and Glass Manufactures by Y3,883,000, Cotton Tissues by Y3,746,000, Toys by Y3,466,000, Hosiery by Y2,648,000, Woollen Tissues by Y2,552,000 and Paper by Y2,435,000. The only decreases were in Rice and Paddy by Y3,194,000, Beans and Peas by Y2,329,000, Hats and Caps by Y1,576,- 000 and Dried Plants for Insectifuge by Y1,047,000.
The chief changes among the commodities imported were gains of Y35,596,000 in Iron, Y24,343,000 in Crude Oil and Heavy Oils, Y19,681,000 in Beans and Peas Y17,831,000 in Oil Yielding Materials, Y16,736,000 in Ores, Y12,777,000 in Coal, Y10,845,000 in Pulp for Paper-making, Y10,273,000 in Copper, Y9,592,000 in Wood, Y7,262,000 in Sulphate of Ammonia (crude), Y6,986,000 in Machinery, Y5,786,000 in Aluminum, Y5,036,000 in Hides and Skins, Y5,306,000 in Wool, Y3,383,000 in Phosphorite, Y3,022,000 in Crude Sugar, Y2,450,000 in Wheat, Y2,688,000 in Rice and Paddy, and Y2,389,000 in Lead; and decreases of Y17,163,000 in. Raw Cotton, Y5,702,000 in Crude Rubber, Y3,374,000 in Oil-cake and Y1,397,000 in Wheat Bran.
The trade with China and Manchukuo for the year 1935 totalled Y978,011,000 as against Y866,048,000 for the year 1934, showing a favourable balance of Y271,659,000 as against a favourable balance of Y241,108,000 in 1934.
