On November 26th, 1930, Japan experienced another serious earthquake, 252 people being killed, 351 injured and over 8,000 buildings were damaged. Though the shock was felt severely in Tokyo the special precautions taken in the rebuilding of the capital fully justified themselves and practically no damage was sustained in the rural districts. The total damage was estimated over twenty million yen.
FOREIGN TRADE FOR 1934
The foreign trade of Japan proper for the year 1934 amounts to $4,454,456,000; that is, Y2,171,925,000 exports and Y2,282,531,000 imports, the balance in favour of imports being Y110,606,000. Compared with 1933 this represents an increase of Y310,879,000 (or 16.7 per cent.) in exports and Y365,311,000 (or 19.1 per cent.) in imports. The adverse balance also shows an increase of Y54,432,000 (or 96.9 per cent.) compared with an adverse of Y56,174,000 for the previous year.
The exports which have increased in value are: Cotton Tissues by Y109,136,000, Rayon Tissues by $36,102,000, Machineries and parts thereof by Y31,920,000, Silk Tissues by Y13,943,000, Iron Manufactures by Y8,380,000, Cotton Yarn by Y7,773,000, Rice and Paddy by Y6,296,000, Pottery by Y6,243,000, Aquatic products by Y6,171,000, Knitted Goods by Y5,571,000 and Wood by Y5,277,000. The largest decreases were in Raw Silk, Wheat Flour, Coal and Refined Sugar in which the value of exports was Y104,107,000, Y6,503,000, Y3,782,000 and Y1,377,000, respectively, less than last year.
The chief changes among the commodities imported were a gain of Y126,578,000 in Raw Cotton, Y34,922,000 in Iron, Y27,653,000 in Rubber, crude, Y25,364,000 in Machineries and parts thereof, Ý14,136,000 in Oil, Kerosene or Petroleum and Y10,536,000 in Coal; and decreases of Y10,860,000 in Rice and Paddy, Y3,635,000 in Wheat, and Y3,115,000 in Crude Sugar.
The trade with China and Manchukuo for the year 1934 totalled Y866,048,000 as against Y718,318,000 for the previous year, showing a favourable balance of Y241,108,000 as against a favourable balance of Y151,302,000 in 1933.
