A striking effect of the anti-Japanese boycott is the suspicion now commonly attached to all kinds of fishery products even when these are genuinely of Chinese origin, and the reason assigned to the reduced exports of cuttle-fish and salt fish from Paklioi to Hongkong is just this fear on the part of the importers that these foodstuffs come under the suspicion of being Japanese goods. A feature of the coastwise export trade was the heavy shipments of Chinese brown sugar in cakes, 73,000 piculs. The value figures for the sections of trade of which records are made by the Customs are as follows: direct foreign imports, 3.4 million dollars as against 2.5 million in 1932; direct exports of Chinese produce to foreign ports, 4.4 million dollars as against 2 million; coastwise-imports of Chinese produce, 3 million dollars as against 3.2 million; and coastwise exports of Chinese produce, 1.9 million dollars as against 0.6 million. Commons were improved by the opening to traffic of the highway leading from Pakhoi to Lingshan, a town situated only a few kilometres from the Kwangsi border.
