silk market offered little sign of advance except in the case of silk waste, the export value figures for which were rather remarkable, amounting to 4.9 million dollars as against only 0.7 million in the previous year and 4.5 million in the good year of 1931. A decline of 1.2 million tons was registered for the shipping trade in entrances and clearances under General Regulations, due mainly to the anti-Japanese boycott, which precluded vessels of that flag from calling at the port, but also due partly to the fact that the China Navigation Company's shipping was brought to a standstill for four months on account of a labour strike at the company's wharves and godowns.
