section of the river. Demand for tonnage was small; especially in the latter part of the year, and the consequent competition for cargo resulted in a reduction in freight rates. The blasting away of about 10,000 tons of rock under Customs supervision in Marchi greatly facilitated navigation of the South bank channel at Kunglingtan Rapid.

The aeroplane service between Hankow and Ichang was well maintained. The road around the city on the site of the old city wall was completed; construction of the road to the oil installations below harbour limits is well under way; and a decision was reached to build a highway to Tangyang, a place situated some 45 miles north- east of Ichang. This latter highway would tap a highly productive area, and would added considerably to the trading facilities of the port, though at the expense of Shasi, which is already connected with Tangyang by motor road. An improved electric plant was installed early in 1934.
