HANGCHOW
A 439
Save for the prevalence of malaria-which, however, is not of a virulent type-the climate of Hangchow is fairly salubrious. July and August are hot, the spring months are wet and raw, but the autumn is delightful, and the winter is cold and bracing.
:
TRADE IN 1932
The Shanghai hostilities reacted sharply on the commercial activities of Hang- chow, paralysing the railway and launch traffic between the two ports, and it was not long before a general dislocation of trade set in owing to the stoppage of credits.
The year was characterised, however, as the worst on record for the silk industry. Weather conditions were unfavourable for sericulture, and the yield was only about 40 per cent. of normal. Two of the largest silk factories closed down, and, altogether, only 2,055 silk concerns (large and small) were in operation during the year as com- pared with 3,858 in the previous year. Teas exported through the Customs showed a slight increase as a whole, and the records take no account of the considerable quantities that are known to have left by railway.
