fleet was done. On the 5th July a monster shark of the shovel-nosed variety, stated to have been caught in Tonkin waters, was brought into Pakhoi harbour in tow of a fishing-junk. Measurements taken by the Harbour Master showed the following dimensions: length, 29 feet; circumference, 21 feet. The weight was computed at 80 piculs.

Pakhoi is the port for the important cities of Limehow () and Yamchow (k), whence considerable quantities of cargo of foreign origin (e.g., piece goods, etc.) were formerly distributed over the country lying between the West River and the seaboard. Since the opening of the West River to steam navigation, however, a con- siderable part of the trade has been diverted to that route and Pakhoi's commerce has suffered in consequence. The value of trade of the port in 1930 was Hk. Tls. 6,859,730, as compared with Hk. Tls. 4,226,673 in 1929, Hk. Tls. 4,269,830 in 1928, Hk. Tls. 3,721,089 in 1927, Hk. Tls. 2,398,803 in 1926, Hk. Tls. 4,453,663 in 1925.
