by the Siang River remaining at an unusually high level, permitting naviga- tion for ordinary-sized vessels to continue without interruption until the end of the year. Large importations from England of textile machinery were made during the year for the Hunan Cotton Mill, a very flourishing concern con- trolled by the local Reconstruction Bureau. The increase in gasolene importa- tions is due to the development of motor traffic, which has followed upon the recent opening of important high roads in the north and south of the pro- vince. That the figures appearing for cigarettes are so large is solely due to the fact that the train service was seriously interrupted for over three months, during which period cigarettes had to be imported temporarily by steamer. For the same reason various staple products, such as live pigs, fresh eggs, paper, and fire-crackers, were despatched by steamer, and the demand for tonnage increased considerably. The winter was one of extraordinary severity. There were heavy falls of snow which lay on the ground for weeks, and a very low temperature for this part of China was recorded for days in succession.
The volume of trade passing through the Changsha Custom House for the year 1930 was Hk. Tls. 35,536,870 as compared with Hk. Tls. 37,877,340, in 1929, Hk. Tls. 38,695,810 in 1928, Hk. Tls. 22,460,892 in 1927, Hk. Tls. 38,001,617 in 1926 and Hk. Tls. 32,801,262 in 1925.
