KYOTO
Kyoto from A.D. 794 to 1868 was the capital of Japan. Its sacred and classic associations as well as the picturesque character of the surrounding country combine to invest the city with an interest attaching to no other place in Japan. Kyoto has excellent hotel accommodation for foreign tourists. The city lies practically in the centre of Japan in the inain line of railway, and is reached from Kobe in less than two hours. The population, according to a recent census of Greater Kyoto is 952,397.
The first Biwa Canal completed in 1895 was designed for the passage of goods and passengers and to supply water power, the second canal constructed at a cost of Y.4,477,805, supplies water for drinking, for the fire brigade, and for purposes of hydro-electricity, etc. The municipal street tramway service begun in 1908 now extends for 110.0561 kilometres.
