Lin arrived in Canton, 1839. 12,000 Chinese troops attacked the English in Ningpo and Chinbai and were repulsed with great slaughter, 1842. The Japanese army occupied Moukden, 1905. Yuan Shih Kai inaugurated as President of the Chinese Republic, 1912. Governor Sir R. G. MacDonnell arrived in Hongkong, 1866. Hongkong University opened by H.E. Sir F. W. Lugard, 1912. King Eward Hotel, Hongkong, completely gutted by fire with serious loss of life, 1929.
