NAGOYA

Nagoya, one of the largest cities in Japan, had a population of 869,000 according to the census of 1928, and is a flourishing commercial centre, famous for its porcelain and cloisonné. Nagoya manages on its own resources its water works, sewage, street tramways, etc. The water works completed in 1914 provided 4 cubic feet per day per capita to a million people, but owing to the fast increasing consumption and the expansion of the city limits in 1921, an extension of the water works was begun in 1926. At the end of September 1929, 47,021 cubic feet of water per day were being supplied to 83,837 households. The street tramways were taken over by the municipality in 1922 and the line now covers 32 miles and more lines are being laid down.
