YOKOHAMA
The foreign trade of the port in 1924 was:-Imports, Yen 635,848,553, and Exports, Yen 672,285,621 (of which raw and waste silk represented Yen 610,098,734), as compared with Imports, Yen 515,258,183, and Exports, Yen 668,611,627 in 1923.
The foreign trade suffered inevitable dislocation after the earthquake, but the -export trade has already largely recovered and is showing a steady increase. Imports received a great stimulation owing to the need for reconstruction material, but the normal import business shows a slower recovery than the export trade.
The heavy cost of rebuilding hampered the return of business houses, but many of these have resumed business in premises temporarily erected pending permanent rebuilding. The foreign-style hotels were all destroyed in the earthquake and hotel accommodation is at present inadequate to requirements. A project is, however, under consideration for the erection of a large modern hotel at a cost of about one and a half million yen. Permanent re-building is in progress, and with the widening and improvement of the streets should show considerable activity during the next year. In the principal business sections all new permanent building must be fireproof. A hospital and a school have been built by the foreign community and were opened in September, 1925, while plans for the re-building of the Yokohama United Club at a cost of lialf a million yen are under consideration.
