SEMARANG

Semarang is situated in 110° 25′ E. longitude and 6° 58' S. latitude. The population numbered in 1917 8,826 Europeans, 20,028 foreign Orientals, and 220,328 natives;. total 249,182. The old city is small, with narrow streets and lanes. On the west side of the river are the residence of the Regent, the Mosque, the Post and Telegraph Office, the Hospital, the Government House containing the Offices of the Resident, the Court of Justice, and different other Government offices.

The railway extends to Batavia and Soerabaja. The roads of Semarang do not afford the same accommodation as the harbour of Tandjoeng Priok, but the view of the city and surroundings is very fine. So-called steam tramways, being in fact light rail- ways with quite a considerable capacity--both for goods and passenger traffic--extend from Semarang westward along the coast as far as Cheribon, and further on up-country to Kadipaten; and also to the eastern parts of the residency Semarang and the- residency Rembang, as well as to Soerabaja, as mentioned above.
