PAHANG

The revenue for 19 8 amounted to $2,861,577 and the expenditure to $2,295,416. The administrative expenditure has in the past, exceeded the_income, and the State on December 31st, 1918 owed $9,667,122 to other States of the Federation. The country promises soon to emerge from its backward condition. This backwardness was due chiefly to the lack of proper means of communication. The indebtedness incurred by the State is represented by public improvements that are going to prove of a remunerative character in years to come. Excellent roads have been constructed, opening up of land for planting and the aiding of prospecting for minerals. All the prin- cipal towns are now connected by telegraph or telephone, and the New Trunk Railway, which is to connect the F.M.S. system with the Siamese Railways, is already in an advanced stage, having reached Kuala Lipis from the southern junction at Gemas. When this line is completed it will be possible to travel by rail from Singapore to Bangkok through Kelantan.

The quantity of copra exported during 1918 was 2,617 piculs as against 6,603 piculs in 1917. The exports of rubber were valued at $2,188,231 in 19 8 as against $3,679,325 in 1917. The export of tin and tin-ore, viz: 77,305 piculs, showed a decrease in quantity of 1,842 piculs, but an increase in value at $1,191,508 on that for the year 1917, which was $6,381,499. The output of gold at Raub was 16,989 ounces.

Imports in 191 were valued at $2,558,109 against $2,870,338 in 1917, and exports at $10,868,271 against $11,224,765 in 1917.
