Treaty. Done at Tientsin, this twenty-sixth day of June, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight laundred and fifty-eight; corresponding with the Chinese date, the sixteenth day, fifth moon, of the eighth year of Hien Fung.

Separate Article annexed to the Treaty concluded between Great Britain and China on the twenty-sixth day of June, in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-eight.
It is hereby agreed that a sum of two millions of taels, on account of the losses su8- tained by British subjects through the misconduct of the Chinese authorities at Canton, and a further sum of two millions of taels on account of the Military expenses of the ex- pedition which Her Majesty the Queen has been compelled to send out for the purpose of obtaining redress, and of enforcing the observance of Treaty provisions, shall be paid to Her Majesty's Representatives in China by the authorities of the Kwangtung Province. The necessary arrangements with respect to the time and mode of effecting these payments shall be determined by Hor Majesty's Representative, in concert with the Chinese authorities of Kwangtung.
When the above amounts shall have been discharged in full, the British forces will be withdrawn from the city of Cauton. Done at Tientsin this twenty-sixth day of June, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight, corresponding with the Chinese date, the sixteenth day, fiith moon, of the eighth year of Hien Fung. AGREEMENT IN PURSUANCE OF ARTICLES XXVI.
AND XXVIII. OF THE TREATY OF TIENTSIN *
SIGNED AT SHANGHAI, 8TH NOVEMBER, 1853
Whereas it was provided, by the Treaty of Tientsin, that a conference should be heid at Shanghai between Officers deputed by the British Government on the one part and by the Chinese Government on the other part, for the purpose of determining the amount of tariff duties and transit dues to be henceforth leviel, a conference has been held accordingly; and its proceedings having been submitted to the Right Honourable the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, High Commissioner and Plenipotentiary of Her Majesty the Queen on the one part; and to Kweiliang, Hwashana, Ho Kwei-tsing, Ming-shen, and Twan Ching-shih, High Commissioners and Plenipotentiaries of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor, on the other part, these High Officers have agreed and determined upon the revised Tariff hereto appended, the rate of transit dues therewith declared, together with other Rules and Regulations for the better explana- tion of the Treaty aforesaid; and do hereby agree that the sand Tariff and Rules- the latter being in ten Articles, thereto appended--shall be equally binding on the Governments and subjects to both countries with the Treaty itself.

Done at Shanghai, in the province of Kiangsu, this eighth day of November, in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty-eight, being the third day of the tenth moon of the eighth year of the reign of Hien Fung,
