IMPERIAL JAPANESE COMMISSIONERS FOR TREATY REVISION TO IMPERIAL CHINESE COMMISSIONers for Treaty REVISION
Shanghai, the 8th Day of the 10th Month of the 26th Year of Meiji.
GENTLEMEN, The provision contained in No. 9 of the Supplementary Rules governing steam navigating on Inland Waters, published in the seventh moon of the twenty-fourth year of Kuang Hsü, regarding the appointment of an officer to collect Jues and duties, not having in all cases been given effect to, we have the honour to request that Your Excellencies' Government will again issue instructions to all pro- vinces to give strict effect to this provision, as it is a matter of importance.
We trust that Your Excellencies will comply with the request contained in this despatch and that you will favour us with a reply.

GENTLEMEN, We have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excel- lencies' despatch of this date to the effect that, the provision contained in No. 9 of the Supplementary Rules governing steam navigation on Inland Waters, published in the seventh moon of the twenty-fourth year of Kuang Hsü, regarding the appoint- ment of an officer to collect dues and duties, not having in all cases been given effect to, you request that instructions be again issued to all provinces to give strict effect to this provision, as it is a matter of importance.
We have noted the above and have communicated with proper authorities in -order that action may be taken, and have now the honour to write this reply for Your
Excellencies' information.

IMPERIAL CHINESE COMMISSIONERS FOR TREATY REVISION TO IMPERIAL JAPANESE COMMISSIONERS FOR TREATY REVISION
Shanghai, the 18th Day of the 8th Moon of the 29th Year of Kuang Hsü. GENTLEMEN,-According to the provision of Article X. of this Treaty, regarding the establishment in Peking of a place of international residence and trade, it is agreed that in case of, and after, the complete withdrawal of the foreign troops, now guarding the Legations and communications, a place in Peking outside the Inner City, convenient to both parties and free from objections, shall be selected and set apart as a place where merchants of all nationalities may reside and carry on trade.
