SOERABAIA

Soerabaia, situated 112° 44′ E. longitude and 7° 14′ S. latitude, has 148,191 inhabitants, of whom 6,523 are Europeans. The voyage from Batavia to Soerabaia can be done in two dasly by the raiway, which extends to Probolinggo. The old city is not like that of Batavia, deserted during the night, but is the most busy part of the place. The fortifications that were built at enormous expense are now partially demolished. The roadstead is very safe and protected by the island of Madoera, and trade is in a flourishing condition, the godowns near the Oedjoeng being in direct communication by rail with the large railway that extends all over the island to Semarang and Batavia.
