hwa-mun to the main street. The width of the main streets is much reduced by the construction in front of nearly every house of a rude wooden shanty used for a work- shop or for business purposes, which gives the streets a poor and squalid appearance, The city, like most eastern towns, is very dirty, heaps of filth being allowed to accumulate, and the open drains on each side of the streets are the receptacles for all sorts of abominations. The shops of the capital are small and unattractive, and contain no articles de luze or curios. The population of the city is variously estimated at from 150,000 to 240,000 persons.
