which, faring the water, stand many of the pincipal houses and hotels. The streets in the foreign settlement are well paved, khel, and drained. There are Anglican, French Catholic, Union Protestant, and natre Mission Churches in the settlement, Tokohama bas greatly increased in importance of la e years. There are three English daily papers published in the port, namely, tue Japan Gazette, the Japan Herald, and the Japan Daily Mail; the latter has also a weekly edition. In addition to these there is a French paper, L'Echo du Japon.

The native population of Yokobama was, according to a census taken in 1882, 71,780. The number of foreign residents in 1882 was 3,521, of whom 2,155 were Chinese, 618 British, 235 American, 160 German, 122 French, 32 Dutch, 42 Portu- guese, 43 Russian, and the remainder of various nationalities.

The imports into Yokohama consist chiefly of cotton and woollen goods. In 1882, according to the British Consul's report, the value of the different classes of imports was as follows:-Cotton manufactures, $8,518,658; woollen manufactures, $1,141,353, mixed cotton and woollen, $782,678; metals, $1,036,274; kerosine, $1,007,169; sugar, $3,099,874; miscellaneous foreign, $3,623,781; miscellaneous local, $999,015; total, $20,208,802, as against $21,472,026 in 1881. The total value of the exports was $26,661,889. Silk is the most valuable of the exports, being set down at $18,636,963, showing an increase of nearly six million dollars on that of the preceding year. The value of the tea exported was $4,472,273. The total export of raw silk during the season from 1st July, 1882, to same date 1883, only half of which period is covered by the Consular returns, was, according to the returns of the Chamber of Commerce, 28,734 bales, of which 4,645 were for England, 14,167 for France, 9,589 for America, and 333 for other countries. The total export for the previous year was 21,776 bales. The export of tea during the season 1st May, 1882, to same date 1883, was 21,030,378ĺbs., all for America, with the exception of 79,481lbs. for England. The export during the previous season was 22,106,542 lbs.
