subsequently captured and held by the Dutch until they in turn gave place to the Chinese under Koxinga. Though only a mere village, it has long carried on a con- siderable native trade with Amoy, Chio-chew, and Foochow. Its staple product is coal, the miles of which are very productive and some of them are now being worked with modern English machinery under the direction of English miners. Sulphur also abounds in a valley in the neighbourhood, but the Authorities will not allow it to be worked. Kelurg was opened to foreign trade at the same time as the otber Foroiosan ports. The foreign trade at this port is confined to the shipment of coal. Its exports are included in the returns for Tamsui,

TAMSUI AND KELUNG.

The port of Tamsui lies in lat. 25 deg. 10 min, N. and long. 101 deg. 26 min, E. on the northern side of the fortile island of Fortuosa. It is an nuin'eresting place, The barbour, like all others in Formosa, has a troublesome bar, which greatly retarda the growth of the port. Dre lging would do much to render it more accessible. The trade at Tamsui is not extensive. Tea grows on the hills in the locality, and the production of Formosa O-longs is annually increasing. In 1872 the export only amounted to 19,513 piculs, while now it is close ou 100,000 piculs. The expert of Camphor, on the other hand, shows a steady decline, owing probably to the wholesale Cestruction of the trees, which were once exceedingly abundant in most parts of the island. The principal exports in 1882 were as follow:-Ta, 90,461 piculs; Camphor, 4,983 picule; Coal, 42,202 tous. The import of Opium in 1882 was 1,584 piculs, and in 1831, 2,142 piculs. The value of the trade of the port i 1:8- was Tls. 3,982,417, and in 1881, Tls. 4,140,807. The population of Tosi is

estimated at 90, 00.

The port of Keelung lies to the north-east of Tamsui, in latitude 25 deg. 9 min. N. and longitude 121 deg. 47 miu. E. It is situated on the shores of a lay between the capes of Foki and Peton, scme twenty miles apart, amidst bold and striking sconery, backed by a range of mountains. It was once a Spanish Settlement, but was
