by durians, mangoes, and mangostins, is grandly beautiful. But flowers flourish to only a limited degree. Orchids indeed abound, but their blossoms soon fade, while a few gorgeous flowering plants but poorly make up for the absence of roses, gera- niums, honeysuckle, and all the vast variety which are associated with a well kept garden at home.
Owing to the long distances, horses and carriages are in universal demand, and numerous hack gharries or palanquins on wheels, a shade better than the old London cab, are to be seen at almost every corner. The syces or drivers, however, are, like the boatmen of the port, a most extortionate set, and require vigorous regulation on the part of the Government.
The total value of imports into Singapore from all countries in 1881 was $70,699,682, and that of 1880 $60,675,733, showing an increase of $10,023,949. The value of imports from the United Kingdom alone in 1881 was $17,165,557, compared $15,236,569 in 1880, showing an increase of $1,929,088. The value of imports from British Colonies in 1881 was $22,454,053, and in 1880 $21,699,267, showing an increase of $754,786. The imports from Foreign Countries amounted $31,079,972, and in 1880 $23,739,897, showing an increase of $7,340,075.
