PREFACE.

Is preparing this, their Sth Annual issue of the China Directory, the publishers have exercised their utmost care in classifying and arranging the many occupations under which residents in China are now included. To Hongkong, and Shanghae indexes are prefixed which will, it is hoped, facilitate reference. It is trusted that for future issues subscribers will favour us with their addresses at an earlier date than has heretofore been the custom, and thus avoid the inevitable delay which usually occurs in bringing out a work of this description.
