The month of November and the two following are the most pleasant in the year, at least to the feelings of persons from the more northern climates. Though the thermometer is not often below 40, and seldoin so low as 30 de- grees, the cold of a Chinese winter is often very severe. Ice sometimes form about one eighth of an inch thick-this is usually in December or January.
