Thirteen years before Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock the Church of England was at work in America. There had been touches of English Christianity in the North American continet before this, but nothing permanent had resulted. The first ser vice from the Book of Common Prayer was conducted by the Chaplain ul Sir Francis Drake's “Pelican" frr-bamed The Golden Hind" on the Pacific coast near San Francisco in the year 1579. But it was not until Jamestown was settled in 1607 that the Church beraine permanently established in the New World.
