The mining industry of the province of Quebec has periencing a remarkable development. For, eight years an annual increase has heon reported in the value of the outpot; and during that period the total value of mineral production in the province has multiplied three and one-third times. In 1932 the total value of butput in this province was $25.683,000 and by 1989 it had risen to $77,370,000. A preliminary report for 1948 shows a total value of $85,431,000. The main factor contributing to the steady growth of the Industry has been the continued expansion of metal mining In western Quebec, which produces gold, silver, copper, sine, selenium. tellurium and pyrite.

Geological And Topographical Survey
A feature of the field programme of the Mues and Geology Branch of the Dominion Department of Mines and Resources this year is an Investigation, of possible commercial sources of tungsten, chromite and manganese. The production of these strategic minerals in Canada has so far been small. A total of twenty-seven geological and nine topographicst parties have been assigned to the work. The importance of gold in the war effort is emphasized in the programme by the several projects designed to guide prospectors in their search for the metal and to aid in the development of active deposits. The largest project is the exploration of au sres of 40,000 square miles tying mast of James Bay in the province of Quebec.

Anti-German Disturbances Growing In Both France And Belgium
LISBON, Aug. 27 (Reuter) News of the renewal of ant! German riots in both France and Belgium, where the military was called out to quell the disorders, has reached here from authorita tive sources.
The trouble in France occurred mostly in munition factories, par. ticularly at St. Etienne, where the workers demonstrated in protest not only against the manufacture of arms for the Germans but alsc because of their personal antipathy to Admiral Darlan and the polley of collaboration with Germany.
In Belgium-inspired to fresh resistance by the example of the Burgomaster of Brussels--the Bel- gians are showing greater activity in sabotage, reducing the factory output and reminding Quislings "what is coming to them" on the day of reckoning.
