MR. ATTLEE CAUTIONS AGAINST ANY
UNDUE OPTIMISM: HOME DEFENCES STRONGER THAN A YEAR
YEAR AGO:
AGO: THE INVASION THREAT STILL REMAINS
A CAUTION AGAINST UNDUE OPTIMISM WAS GIVEN BY MR. CLEMENT K. ATTLEE, LORD PRIVY SEAL, WHEN HE OPENED THE DEBATE ON THE WAR SITUATION IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS YESTERDAY. One outstanding fact of the position today, as compared with a year ago, was that Hitler was now fighting on twe fronts which the German leaders had always striven to avoid,
Hitler had (says Reuter) attacked Britain furiously by air and he had waged war unceasingly at sea but the invasion, which at one time seemed imminent, had been postponed.
BUT, said the Lord Privy Seal, NOTHING COULD BE MORE FOOLISH THAN TO IMAGINE THAT POST- PONEMENT MEANT ABANDONMENT.
The possibility of the attempt remained, and must remain, a constant factor in our considerations. Instructions had been given to all forces in the British Isles to bring to the highest state of readiness the preparations against invasion.
THE BRITISH ARMY AT HOME WAS WELL EQUIPPED AND READY AND ALL STRENGTH WAS IM- MEASURABLY GREATER THAN TWELVE MONTHS AGO.

Mr. Attlee stressed the very heavy losses in men and material by the German forces.

Mr. Eden said that the British Government had not failed to note that the Japanese news- papers have recently been using the same kind of language regarding Thailands they had em- ployed before the Japanese demands for bases in Indo-China,
The British Ambassador in Tokyo had pointed out to the Japanese Foreign Minister that if a step of this knd were taken, IT MUST INEVITABLY GIVE RISE TO A MOST SERIOUS SITUATION BETWEEN BRITAIN AND JAPAN.
