TURKEY TOWARDS CLASHES ON RUSSIAN FRONTIER DENIED BY GERMAN GOVERNMENT: ULTIMATUM RUMOUR
BRITAIN AND GERMANY EXPLAINED:
WILL NOT BE AN INSTRUMENT ALLEGED IN REPORT OF AGGRESSION AGAINST OWN ALLY
Friendship Pact Spells No Change In National Policy
TURKEY'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS BRITAIN AND GERMANY
FOLLOWING
UPON THE NEW 10-YEAR PACT OF FRIENDSHIP SIGNED IN ANKARA BETWEEN GERMANY AND TURKEY IS EXPLAINED IN A LEADING ARTICLE IN THE SEMI- OFFICIAL ANKARA NEWSPAPER ULUS, QUOTED BY THE TURKISH RADIO, SAYS REUTER.
The Editor of the newspaper writes: "WE ARE NOT RENEWING OUR FRIEND- SHIP WITH GERMANY NOR ARE WE TRYING TO REPAIR THE OLD FRIENDSHIP. THERE EXISTS.NO DIRECT DISCORD BETWEEN US AND GERMANY.
"We will remain neutral in the complications centring around Turkey. "WE SHALL NOT BE AN INSTRUMENT OF AGGRESSION AGAINST OUR OWN ALLY, BRITAIN, NOR WILL TURKEY ACT IN A WAY INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE FRIENDSHIP AND CONFIDENCE OF GERMANY.
"This does not spell any change in our national policy. When Turkey conclud- ed an alliance with Britain, we considered it our duty to prevent the spreading of war into our mutual zone of security--NOT TO INSTIGATE ITS COMPLICATIONS—AND TO DEFEND THE PEACEFUL ORDER OF THIS ZONE.”
