Portland Street Fire Recalls Jury's Riders At Inquest Last Year

Within 30 minutes a fire. which started on the first floor of a Chinese tenement house, had completely gutted four storeys and eaused the death of an old woman and a 12-month-old baby.

The fire, which started at about 8.45 a.m. on Friday, soon had enveloped the common stairways of houses Nos. 18 and 20, Portland Street, and more than 20 people were in danger of being trapped. As it was, three children were found to be missing after the oc- cupants had been rescued.
