OF BRITAIN TOTALS

£12 MILLION EVERY DAY Chancellor Of The Exchequer Moves Two New Credits

GREAT BRITAIN IS NOW SPENDING £12,225,000 À DAY. THIS WAS DISCLOSED TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS YESTERDAY BY THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHE- QUER, SIR KINGSLEY WOOD, STATES A LONDON MESSAGE,

The Chancellor called for further votes of credit which he said would mean more sacrifices from the people of the country.

THE CHANCELLOR STATED THAT £8,000,000 WERE BEING SPENT DAILY ON THE FIGHTING SERVICES AND THE BALANCE OF £4,250,000 ON GENERAL WAR PURPOSES.

Two new yotes were asked for £600,000,000 and for £1,000,000,000 for the financial year 1941-1942.

M

"Our present war expen- diture," said the Chan- cellor, is based on the highest amount spent in the last war. Our total votes on credit in this financial year would amount to £5,300,000,000 compared to £2,232,000,000. This was the largest sum in the third year of the last war."

Sir Kingsley said that, these figures were evidence of Great Britain's strength and sincerity of purpose."

"It is imperative," he sald that civilian con- sumption should be kept right down and that every-

thing should be saved for the state."

The Chancellor's state- ment that these sums would be well spent "was greeted with cheers.

He also declared that at present the gap between taxation and saving was too great, but he added that inflation danger had been greatly exaggerated.

The Government had considered the whole mat- ter and would not hesitate to take steps to main- tain the country's national stábility.
