CANDLEMAS; END OF HEROIC LIFE: DESTRUCTION OF CHURCHES

TOMORROW, THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN THE TEMPLE AND OF THE PURIFICATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, is the day on which candles are blessed for use on the altar, and so it is called "Candlemas." The significance of this Pre- sentation of Christ was seen in the early ages of the Church, though it was some centuries before a feast was actually instituted to com- memorate it. It is forty days after the Feast of the Nativity, and is regarded as the concluding feast of the Christmas cycle.

The meeting of Simeon with the Infant Christ was formerly is to given considerable prominence in the day's liturgy, and it

blessing of this that can be traced the choice of the day for the candles. The

Gospel story tells of Simeon halling Christ as " light to the revelation of the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel" carried, signifying the entry of Christ into the Temple.

This can be traced back to the eighth century, and two centuries later the actual blessing of the candles was added.

It is possible, though there is no historical evidence
