This devotion, which had its origin in a commemoration of the forty hours during which, secording to tradition, the body of Christ remained in the tomb, is cele brated throughout the world at some thine during the year in practically every church situated in a populous district. In some places it is continued during the night, but for the most part it is spread over three suocessive days.
