SPRING FOR AUTO WHEEL

Henry Ford has just received a patent (No. 2,214,456) for a new system of suspending the rear wheels of automobiles which is sald give greater riding com- tort to passengers,

my the new suspension each wheel is sprung independently so that it takes up the shock of bumps with minimum transfer to the auto body,

The rear wheel axles are housed in tubes which project from the differential unit. These axle tubes are connected to the differential by two universal or oscillating joints. A bracket fixed to the car body, is joined to the ends of the axle tubes by radius rods.

Each wheel is thus free to move up and down and swing indepen- idently from the other. A single spring mounted across the axle tubes takes up the shes.

In the conventionauto, rear wheels are mounted on a rigid, non-oscillating axle tube. Mr. Ford states that prior attempts at independent rear wheel suspension were complicated and required four universal joints, instead of the two which he uses.

The patent is assigned to the Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, Mich.
