Policy Of Giving Every Aid To Britain Not Deterred
OFFICIAL CIRCLES IN THE UNITED STATES ARE NOT IMPRESSED BY THE THREATS UTTERED BY GERMANY YESTERDAY IN CONNEXION WITH THE SUG- GESTION THAT HAS BEEN VOICED FOR SEIZING ENEMY SHIPS IN THE UNITED STATES AND GIVING THEM TO BRITAIN, STATES A LONDON MESSAGE.
There is no indication in official quarters that the German Foreign Office spokes- man's statement will deter United States policy of giving every assistance, short of war, to Britain. The view generally taken in the United States is that Germany hoped to force America into a war with Japan in order to divert attention to the Far East.
If that plan failed, the United States will not be surprised if Germany herself declares war against America.
As one paper puts it: "We are going to build up our defences with all possible speed and sharing them with Britain. If Herr Hitler does not like it, it is up to him to make the final break.”
