U.S. FAVOURED IN INTERNATIONAL | Oxford Blue TILT AGAINST PORTUGAL
Navy Should Win Charity Game With Local Leaguers
BY ROY.
IN AN EFFORT TO PUSH THROUGH the local base ball schedule, special arrangements have been made to allow the U.S.S. Asheville players to represent the U.S.A. in today's International Series Final against Portugal at 3 p.m., with the proceeds going to the War Fund. Another Charity Cup match will constitute the card for tomorrow, starting at 10.30 am and with the series deadlocked at a win aplece, the U.S. Navy-Hongkong Baseball League struggle for the third leg should be well worth the 50-cent admission.
TODAY'S INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP decider has, of course, been brought forward from next week, for the reason that the Portugal squad would not be able to turn out until the third week in September, owing to Volunteer duties, if the match were not played this week.
Jimmy Deegan and Hans Waggoner-are-the only two local players that will be seen in Uncle Sam's line-up, the former probably.. being stationed at the Windy Alley with the latter in the right garden where he was station- ed when he pulled an amazing unassisted double killing last
week against China.
"Dogle" Wood and "Doc Molthen will call the plays for the Stars and Stripes who will have speed-king Joe Harvey on the mound Hurling to Tony Grovernale."
Despite the all-round strength of Portugal, they are likely to be troubled by the change of hurler and 1 feel. that the Yanks should start on the short end of the odds.

BLIND RIDE BEATS
CYCLE RECORD
To. Miss Marguerite Wilson goes the honour of breaking the first road cycle record under war-time conditions.
She rode, from London to Bir- mingham in 5hr; 44min, 17sec., bettering Miss T. M. Biggs 1937 record of 5r. 51min. by more than six minutes,
The ride was anything but easy, for Miss Wilson was riding "blind" stranger to the road, with not
a signpost, not a milestone any....... where on the route to guide her.
