OUTPOST" OF THE ALLIED THREATENS
CAUSE: LONDON MEETING
LONDON, July 9-In a letter published In The Times of June 5 last Professor Arthur Newell raised the question of how Americans in Britain might aid the Allies—and America-and asked for suggestions and offers of help from his fellow country men and women still in this country.
He said that one practical suggestion was that they might form an "Americans-in-Britain outpost" of the William Allen White Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies. There was
an immediate and ens the future of every home in widespread response to Professor the land. Newell's letter from Americans still in Britain, and "such an out-' post has already been formed and has affillated with the William White Committee.
"Feeling that Great Britain is America's first line of defence, the London committee is appealing to all Americans' remaining here to join them in aid of that defence." and Prüfessor Newell stated. yes- terday that only two replies un- favourable to the plan have been received. ALASKA?
WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 Con- gressional Delegate Anthony J. Dimond of Alaska today expressed concern to the United Press over -reported, large-scale Soviet military activity in Siberia and Soviet press statements that the sale of Alaska to the United States under the „Czarists wag^ illegal.
Mr. Dimond claimed to have |learned that the Russians are building a hüge submarine and naval base on the Komandorski islands with the aid of German technicians, and also a large base onan island in the middle of the Bering Straits, a few miles from Alaska.
"I England loses. Japan and Russia would be in a position to harass us from the Pacific while the
axis powers attacked the United States and Latin America," Mr. Dimond declared. "Japan and Russia are friendlier than most think. It. 13 not inconceivable that they will conclude some sort of an alliance." He said that the U. S. Army is sending 3,000 more men to Alaska before winter.
