REOPENING OF CANTON RIVER

Hitch Reported In Negotiations

A new hitch has arisen in the neratlations for the reopening of the Canton River to full trade, ac- cording to official sources yester- day morning.

The Japanese are said to insist; for the reopening of the river, on a condition that the stevedores, who are to work on, the ships at the Canton end, should belong to an approved association.

The British reaction is appar ently that such a"condition would mean that the Japanese would have an unfair monopoly or con- trol of the stevedores who are picked by the Japanese and have Japanese foremen.

A PRECAUTION

It was stated that the Japanese had made this only as a reason- able precaution against smuggling if unregistered stevedores were to be employed.

Asked whether such an associa- tion, under "the control of the Japanese, would not make it easier to call a strike against British ships, a Japanese official agreed on this point, but added that similar action could be taken re- gardless of the association.

The Japanese official further said that the stevedoring associa- tion was not meant to be estab- lished permanently and was only For the duration that Canton was being occupied and-held by force.

LONDON, July 31 (BWS)-An Admiralty communique states that the "auxiliary patrol yacht Guizar was sunk yesterday the result of an enemy air st tack. There was no loss of life."
