FOURTEEN KILLED IN FIRE

YOUNG GIRL SUCCUMBS IN

The Percival Street, fire, which was reported exclusively in the Daily Press yesterday, has taken a bigger toll than was indicated in the earlier re- ports. Inquiries from No. 2 Police Station elicited the Information that 11 bodies had been removed to the Publie Mortuary as a result of the outbreak. while the twelfth victim, Kam Sze-mul, a 10-year- old girl, succumbed to her injuries at the Queen Mary Hospital yesterday.

Up till late yesterday afternoon no detailed in- formation was available regarding the manner in which the unfortunate people had been killed, but an officer who was at the scene of the fire ventured.. the opinion that they must have been suffocated by the fumes and then burned to death. ·"་

Interviewed by a representative of the Dally Press yesterday; the manager of Lee Hysan Estates, owners of the houses involved, confirmed the re- 'port that the premises damaged by the outbreak, Nos. 34 and 36, Percival Street, were covered by insurance. He also added that although the pre- mises were not provided with fire- escapes the top floor verandahs were inter-connected by doors,"

At this stage, the speaker said he could not do better than quote a passage from the message sent from his Majesty the King to the British Expeditionary Force, as follows:~~~

"All your countrymen have been following with pride and admira- tion the courageous resistance of the British Expeditionary Force during the continuous fighting of the last fortnight,
