RELATIVES WHO VISIT MAGISTRATES HOMES Practise Is Disapproved By Mr. R. Edwards

The practise of relatives of litigants visiting magistrates' homes in connexion with cases under trial was disapproved by Mr. R. Edwards at the Central Court yesterday when he commented оп the action of the sister of an "accused who had approached him in his residence on the previous evening to enquire as ta what sentence would likely be imposed on her

brother.

"During my term on the Bench, this is the second time it has occurred," he added, "and I hope it will be the last.".

INTRICACIES OF BROADCASTING

Talk Before H.K.

Rotarians

Hongkong Rotarians were given an insight into the intricacies of broadcasting at their weekly timin meeting yesterday when Rotarian R. P. Morris gave an interesting and instructive talk on "Empire Wireless Communcations."

Mr. L C. F. Bellamy, President, was in the chair, assisted by Mr. Harry Hong Sling, H. Secretary.

In addition to visiting Rotarians. --G, M. Martin (Florida), Khoo Boo- gong and Dr. Szeming Sze (Shang hall, the following guests were welcomed by the President:- Messrs. T Carmona (Manila)

G. R. Razavet, O. Davis, D. C. Loneraine, M. A. Cairns, F. K. Garten. Phillip Samuel and Y. M. "Ho.

The President also made brief reference to the impending de- parture on leave of Rot. T. B.

These observations were made at the conclusion of the case in which Koo Ka-ming. clerk of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Co, Ltd., pleaded guilty to six charges of embezzlement of $2,187,84 from his employers.

Koo said that he was forced to commit the offence because his salary was not sumclent to meet his family's expenses.

LENIENCY PLEA

The Rev. J. R. Higgs, asking for leniency on the defendant's be- half, said that Koo had come from a respectable family and had been

educated in

of

the "best schools in Hongkong.

Although Koo earned a small salary, he gave $50 to his family each month.

Remarking that the blow which the family would suffer was not

caused by the Court but by the defendant himself through His misconduct, and that the Court could not see its way to be lenient
