Satisfactory Year

The drop of some $113,008 in the gross profits of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Co, Lid, for 1939 in comparison with that for the previous year, was attributed, so far as the Hongkong establish- ments are concerned to the outbreak of hostilities in Europe, in the early part of September last year and the consequent decline of the' tourist business in the Colony.

This was mentioned by Mr. J. Scott Harston, chairman of dires- tors, in proposing the adoption of the report and accounts for 1939 at the aririial general meeting held yesterday,

I can state that during the first quarter of the current year our Hotels in the North have been doing busi- neas to full capacity, but, as you know, the offset of exchange de- terioration has worsened since the turn of last year. TECHNICAL ERROR PLEA

W. A. Hollwig. of Messrs. Hodges and Co.. was summoned before Mr. H. G. Sheldon at the Central Court yesterday for falling to make a. declaration to the Import and Export Department regarding the import of 10 cases of saccharin into the Colony.

The defendant pleaded gulity and said that it was a technical mistake.

He explained that in former years, when goods were imported to Hongkong, the bill of lading was sent to the bank while the goods were taken delivery of by Messrs. Sherley and Co., distribu- tors. The system changed in 1939 and the bill of lading was sent direct to him though delivery was still taken by the distributors. He sent the bill of lading to the bank and was under the impres- slom that Messrs. Sherley and Co., had made the necessary de- claration.
