East yard, where no ship has been built since 1925, is being opened up again, but with an Improved layout of the plater ,machine shop and botter access

to the yard.

The new large machine shop which I promised to be ready at the end of-1939 was not so ready. but some of its heavy machines are now installed and working, and this new abop I have no doubt, will soon prove Ita effetency.

CREATION OF RESERVES

I doubt if shareholders fully ap- preciate why we must develop in what may appear to them a some what costly manner calling for the creation of considerable reserves. Them are so many sides to our work--we employ no less than 20 different kinds of tradesmen and we are not able to put our work out to specialists as can the yards at horge. We must be able to make practically everything ourselves or lose the business to places which can..

It is good, moreover, to sen that tradition is being upheld in the support given to his Ma- jesty's Governments fighting services by the

personnel of

the Company and that they are, by their many activities. keeping alive that spirit of comradeship in the local social and sporting world for which the Company is justly famed.

War Fails To Mar Britain's Bank Holiday

HUGE CROWDS AT

SEASIDE

LONDON, Mar, '26 (Beuter)---On the first Easter Monday of the war, huge crowds of "holiday- makers throughout the country flocked to the seaside by train, hikers thronged the countryside and cyclists Alled the roads.

ATTENDANCE

Those present were: Hon. Mr. S.

Dodwell (Chairman), Hon. Mr. Messrs:-A. Vaswani, G. W. Sewell; We must be equipped to deal J. J. Paterson (Director), Hon. Mr. Wong Chi Po, M. H. Lo, Ip Ting with any large repairs which may M. K. foresee and advance, and this I think I can fairly claim we are doing.

The suggested appropriation of

$350,000 for a Special Reserve for FINA

extension is to enable us to ptr- chase from the Hongkong Govern- ment and reclaim a portion of the sea-front on the east side of our East Yard to give us an additional deep water berth. This additional deep water berth has been a great need for a long time, for,,with a crane, we have been sorely put to it to accommodate others without interfering with dockings and un- dockings, or to avoid the coin- venience of shifting ships when we need to use the great crane for other work.

I give you the Board's assuṛ- ance that there has not been and there will not be any pro- fligate spending, but if we are to attract and retain clients we must keep an everwatchful eye upon the maintenance of aär efficiency.

TRIBUTE TO STAFF In conclusion, gentlemen, a word about the staff and the way in which they have responded to the extra calls made upon them since the outbreak of" War. They will- ingly formed a Volunteer unit which trains regularly twice a week at the Docks, wherea small range has been erected, and the "Dock Guerillas" as they nick- named themselves, about 35 strong will give a good account of themselves if called upon. Others over military age have at- tended lectures in field work given by Major Walker, so that they could serve in the event of it be- ing necessaTY. About 40 attended fa series of ARP. lectures.

All this has been done at the end of long working days, and though perhaps not exactly Com- pany's business, I mention these things to indicate the staff's sense of public duty which is paralleled only their sense of duty to the. Company.

SECONDER'S REMARKS In seconding the adoption of the report and accounts Mr. G. W. Sewell, sald, in part: While the nett proft made last year must be regarded as satisfactory it is still more gratifying to learn, Air, of the stops taken to consolidate the Company'a position, Sound inan-) clal or any other leadership must make adequate provision for the! future if adveralty is to be success- fully overcome.
