SOMEWHERE IN SHANTUNG, Jan. 23 (Central)—. Supported by artillery and planes, a Japanese detachment from Sinhsien, in, West Shantung, near the Hopel border. launched a drive towards Chaocheng, in the south, last week-end. A fierce battle ensued, resulting in the defeat of the Japanese.
Later, reinforced, the enemy staged a comeback. They succeeded in penetrating into Chaocheng, but were again Many driven out. Their retreat developed into a rout.. Japanese bodies and a large quantity of arms and am- munition were abandoned.
